I created Echolocation, a physical board game with a question in mind: How can I use a physical board game, using storytelling and psychology, to immerse a user in a sense of foreboding? I began with research, looking at game mechanics, narratives, and horror stories. I conducted user testing to fine-tune the rules and identify any usability issues or plot holes. Lastly, I prototyped the game. Inspired by games like Mafia and Among Us. Echolocation challenges players to uncover the imposter among them, while navigating unpredictable twists and psychological tension.
I began with brainstorming ideas and researching on the topics that I had chosen. Such as the target audience, the psychology of board games, and the narrative techniques used in horror films. Ensuring that I am aware of the pain points and opportunities that arise while researching.
I was able to generate insights and a research question through brainstorming and research, which served as a guide for my design process and experimentation, where I could gain an answer.
Creating a general idea for this board game developed the project's final outcome.
To make sure the game had a clear narrative flow across the board game, I designed a prototype of the cards and a set of rules to user test. To see if this project provides an answer to my question.
